Up Close with Red Kites

For the past five years, I’ve been living in West Yorkshire — a region where one of my favourite animals, the red kite, thrives in abundance. Only a few decades ago, red kites were on the brink of extinction in the UK, so the fact that these birds can so readily be seen in this area is a huge conservation success. Whether in the centre of Leeds, on the motorway or in the countryside, you’d be unlucky to not come across a red kite here sooner or later.

One of the best places to see them is around Harewood Estate, only a short drive from Leeds. Over the years, I’ve visited Harewood many times to see these stunning birds. I recently moved away from the area, but before I did, I made one final visit to say goodbye to its star residents.

Whilst the kites are definitely the star of the show at Harewood, a special mention below to some of its other inhabitants.
